Where Have You Gone, Joe Brewster?

Greg Scarpa Sr. and Joe Brewster were the very best of friends—as close as two made men could be. Scarpa was godfather to Brewster’s oldest son; over the years, Greg Sr. and Linda had spent hundreds of evenings with Joe and his wife. They were a foursome regularly spotted on the New York nightclub circuit. Sometimes they went to Jilly’s, an Italian restaurant in Manhattan notable in part because it was a favorite hangout of Frank Sinatra (who was friendly with the owner, Jilly Rizzo). Sinatra often dined at Jilly’s when he was in New York, and it wasn’t unusual for Scarpa and Brewster to be seen at the legendary singer’s table.

It was a pet peeve of Scarpa’s, however, that Sinatra, one of the wealthiest and most famous performers in the world, seemed to be rather tight with a buck. Indeed, more often than not, it was Scarpa who picked up the check when he dined with Sinatra. Having grown weary of the chairman’s stinginess, Scarpa one night turned to Joe Brewster and said, “Let’s leave while Sinatra is still sitting there.”

Brewster’s eyes bulged out of his head. “What? Are you kidding?”
